Migration Path
For existing Mare Synchronos server operators looking to join the Honse Farm federation.
Provisional Notice
A comprehensive migration guide will be published when Honse Farm reaches v1.0 release (Q1 2026). We're currently in beta testing to ensure the migration process is smooth and well-documented before we ask server operators to commit to changes.
Our Goal
We want every existing Mare-based server to be able to migrate to Honse Farm federation if they choose to. The migration path is designed to be flexible and respect the autonomy of server operators.
Two Migration Options
Option 1: Full Migration to Honse Farm
Server operators can choose to migrate to the Honse Farm server and client implementations. This path includes:
- Guided migration process for existing Mare databases
- User data preservation (character data, pairings, permissions)
- Clear upgrade steps with rollback options
- Support during the transition period
Option 2: Federation API Implementation
Alternatively, operators can keep their existing Mare server and client while implementing the Federation APIs. This allows them to:
- Maintain their current Mare setup
- Join the federation network at their own pace
- Implement federation features incrementally
- Retain full control over their codebase
The Beauty of Open Source
Because both Mare Synchronos and Honse Farm are open source, server operators have complete visibility into what's changing. You can:
- Review the federation protocol implementation
- Audit the security model
- Test the migration process in a staging environment
- Contribute improvements to the migration tooling
This transparency ensures that operators can make informed decisions about whether and how to migrate.
More Information Coming Soon
